To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the significant events of the opening of the standard-gauge railway line all the way from Sydney to Melbourne and the introduction of the new passenger train — Southern Aurora, we feature a period-style, artistic rendering of two Auroras crossing on NSW’s Main Southern line in the dead of night.

Floods cut the Trans Australian railway between Port Augusta and Perth during Easter 1975 and stranded a set of Indian Pacific carriages in Sydney. Opportunity was taken to run the carriages to Melbourne on a relief Spirit of Progress, seen here with X44 passing Sunshine loop on Friday 28 March 1975.
